5 of 5 people found the following review helpful Great value, no flats yet, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Vittoria Randonneur Hyper Tire (Misc.) I was looking at the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme because I've had such a good experience with the Marathon Plus, but at $70 each vs. only $35 a tire for the Vittoria Randonneur Hyper the choice was easy. I've only put about 500 miles on them but they feel great, roll fast (32s), the reflective bead is wonderful, and Vittoria's little red layer of puncture protection just really seems to work (never had a flat on my plain Randonneur's either). Vittoria's rubber is quite soft and supple so I'm a little worried about how fast they might wear out, but hey, for half the price...And they're foldable, woo! Go for it. * Update May 2010 (~1,500mi city miles post purchase) - after running through a section of glass strewn highway shoulder with the rear loaded for a weekend camping trip I picked up my first flat. It was the back tire off to the side, I guess the kevlar belt isn't all that wide? I was also rolling at a lower than usual "comfort" PSI (chip seal country... They have a lively ride, mount easily, and are very puncture resistant (I went 1500+ miles before getting my first flat). Unlike many other tires, these run true to size, and are reasonably light for their width/volume.Do yourself a favor and run them softer than you think you should. I've taken my Hyper-equipped road bike on mild dirt trails and the tires performed fine with as little as 40psi (and I weigh close to 200 pounds). Even on pavement, I've rarely ridden them with more than 70psi. These are voluptuous tires--enjoy the cushion! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful Vittoria Randonneur Hyper, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Vittoria Randonneur Hyper Tire (Misc.) I put these on my Scott Aspect 29 Tour so that I could try my hand at keeping up with some of my roadie friends .... (its impossible to expect a 30+lb bike to keep up with a 19lb bike) ... and they have helped get me close.Going from 2.25" knobbies to this tire set was a big deal. I went from an average pace of 13-14mph to 16-18mph just by swapping the tires. Pretty ridiculous (and Im a large man at 6'1", 245lbs). These are half the width as my original Schwalbe Rapid Robs, and they take nearly twice the PSI (Im running mine at 85psi). This makes the ride much more stiff and rigid (which i despise) ... but the reward is me going faster than I could have dreamed on this particular bike. They were easy to install; mind you, we left them in the sun for 30 min before we even attempted to throw them on the rims ... makes the tires much easier to work with. Design is sweet ... reflective sidewall is no joke (lights up like a Christmas tree)... Read more |
